Lovely mossy 18th century tombstone in St John's, Seaborough, Dorset. What a shame someone has strimmed the grass and wildflowers, particularly in No Mow May.

In the churchyard of St Mary's church, East Brent, is this stone figure, seeming to rise out of the grass. English Heritage describe it as: 'Recumbent figure of a merchant. Probably early C16. Dressed stone. Life-size effigy clad in a robe, the head resting on a woolpack, face mutilated.' Why is he out here, and not buried inside the church with all the other rich folk? Or has his effigy been moved outside for reasons unknown?

A worn grave marker. Aragon, Spain. I find there's a kind of beauty to grave marker, both in it's worn and neglected state and in what you can imagine it once was.

In Aldeburgh Museum is the grave marker of Josef Obert, a German prisoner of war, who died on 18th November, 1918. Josef and twelve other POWs were buried in Orford churchyard, having been prisoners on Orford Ness. The vicar noted in the register, 'The above Germans, prisoners of war, died in the great epidemic of influenza which spread through the world in the year 1918'. In September 2014, Josef's grave marker was found in the sexton's shed.
