My favorite quote for today:
“Politics is a matter of choices, and a man doesn't set up the choices himself. And there is always a price to make a choice. You know that. You've made a choice, and you know how much it cost you. There is always a price.”
― Robert Penn Warren, All the King's Men

Great Googly Moogly! Out of the few thousand books that I have read in my life, #DemonCopperhead is in the top 10. #BarbaraKingsolver stuck the landing perfectly. The #Pulitzer folks got this one right.

While I think the gravitational force to #RightWing extremism is powerful, there are some who I think are persuadable. Minds do change. How? A great book to read is “How Minds Change” by David McRaney. I’d say it was the most meaningful book I read last year
I’ll check out “The Wave”. I’m not familiar with Morton Rhue

"But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."
"In fact," said Mustapha Mond, "You're claiming the right to be unhappy."
"All right then," said the Savage defiantly, "I'm claiming the right to be unhappy."

Who is smart, by the way?
To me, you are smart if you are open, adventurous, and curious — if you bond with others quickly and have a great sense of humor — if you can analyze difficult situations quickly and act accordingly — if you are self-aware, confident, and always have a positive mindset — and of course, if you are good with money.

Someone hold my hand. My senior got into #StJohnsCollege and it's her first choice and I want it for her but it's financially draining on both her and us before she even gets to grad school. If she just did a standard #liberalArts degree and not the #greatBooks program, we have another college acceptance that would get her through undergrad debt free. Yes, I grasp the extent of our #privilege but we still have to choose. #johnnies perspective would be welcome

Just finished listening to the Dirk Maggs radio adaptation of “Good Omens” and although I loved it, I prefer the TV version. Having said that, the TV version is inferior when compared to the book! All versions are worth spending time getting to know though and I thoroughly recommend all three #GoodOmens #BookVersusTelevisionVersusRadio #RadioComedy #GreatBooks #TVAdaptation

Hi Twitter
Q; what do you do with such ancient treasures as a complete #Encyclopaediabrittanica or #greatbooks (each with their own bespoke bookcase??
Cleaning out mum’s affairs hard enough-what can you do with old books these days?
Where’s that circular economy?

Until two days ago, I thought the name "mouthbreather" was an epithet used to describe someone with dubious intelligence and even worse manners (dare I say white and/or MAGA?). Then I started reading the book #BREATH by #JamesNestor.
Turns out folks of European descent (myself included) have forgotten the health and wellness benefits of nose-breathing. Indigenous folks and other cultures have practiced nose-breathing since the beginning of time. #ReadAlong #GreatBooks #Health #Breathe

'Africa is Not a Country' by Dipo Faloyin is so very worth a read to better understand the world and the impact of colonialism - and, if you're a writer - to better understand great writing.
Inspired, sharp, funny, horrific, provocative and vibrant, this is a history book and commentary that feels alive in your hands.

Hey now! I'm Jeremy.
I ski, hike, backpack, and run, with the Horsetooth half marathon and the BolderBoulder 10k planned next. I'm a Linux system administrator with a pedestrian commute to work. I participate in the Online Great Books program reading Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War next, arrange my physical and race training with the help of a future.co coach, participate in my Storyline Arvada community, and shake off comfort a bit with regular challenges like cold showers in The Strenuous Life community. I enjoy friendly, intelligent people and expect you're one of them. Grateful to be here!

Earlier I asked about the"new to you" author that you discovered in 2022.
Now I want to know about an under-hyped author that you love?
What author/series/book needs to be more widely read? My answer is in the replies.

This goes out to all my #reading people out there. Who is the “new to you” author you found in 2022? What did you like about them? What book do you recommend? I’ll go first:
I discovered the Canadian author #GuyGabrielKay He’s notable for taking real life historical eras and turning them into fictional high fantasy. The majority of his books are standalone with a few two-book sets thrown in. I happily recommend #TIGANA but any book is a good starting point. #GreatBooks #Books #AmReading

We've quite enjoyed reading modern retellings of myths and tales, the nest example being Margaret Miller's retellings of Greek myths, like the following:

We read the "Song of Achilles" after reading Homer's The Iliad and it was a wonderful counterpart to the original I just wish we had time to read more of these, but there are so many #GreatBooks to read with him before he leaves for college!

Moby Dick is a great work because manages to soar while not taking itself too seriously. Melville via Ishmael delivers a grand paean to whaling that centers the bloody, exploitative, and frankly absurd nature of the business.
I understand he finished a rather simple, semi-autobiographical draft, then binged Shakespeare and decided to rewrite it as a grand tragedy. I'd love to see what that process was like.
