Grebes are among the oldest of all #birds; #fossils from 80 million yrs ago have been discovered.

They tend to be clumsy on land b/c their legs are so far back on their body, but they are great at diving - up to 17' - & pursuing prey underwater for up to 30 seconds at a time. They eat a lot of their own #feathers, poss to protect against sharp fish bones.
