@Sheril The same lies here in . No windmills back in the 70ies, when I started with as hobby. Three breeding pairs of in the state of , where I lived. Now more than 120 pairs. The same with other large birds, , , , , , well increasing. and as new breeding species. The same tendency in . Lots of large windmills now, great birds increasing.

Get my good side.

I try to post a new unpublished photo with all of my toots. But, with some birds I have multiple photos with a slightly different posture. This photograph os a great egret (Ardea alba), is one of those. It's just that it's such a perfect setting how can I not use all the photos.

“Everything in Louisiana is flat, so I found myself lost in the expanse of crawfish fields, telephone lines, rice silos, and lonesome rural homes, and my ability to judge distance became compromised. This beautiful Florida resident, the Great Egret (Ardea alba) with wings still outstretched, has just touched down on a wooden pylon at a dock on the bay. They are such graceful birds, especially when in flight and their white feathered wings always remind me of angels.

Beware of the Great White.

This great egret (Ardea alba) was at a small pond in Georgia last November. I like the colors of the water, and the reflection of the bird in the water, though I wish the bird's reflection was completely in the frame.

Another wanderer.

This great egret flew directly overhead while I was sitting outside this morning. There were dark clouds at the time but I'm not complaining. It's always interesting to see these birds fly by. Egrets and Herons used to gather at a pond about three of four hundred meters down the road from my house. But there's a house next to the pond now and I don't think that they gather in the numbers that they used to if they do at all.

Here's to the last day of , which, where I lived, has been one long string of winter storms with occasional pearls of sunshine. Here is a tiny marshlet I love near the mouth of the local river (and actually at the edge of a suburban neighborhood). It's like a meditative garden for all the birds that live nearby. Here, perhaps, is a standing .

Ready to strike.

This is a great egret with its neck forming the classic "S" shape, ready to strike out a prey. Notice that towards the top of its neck there is a spot that is bent at a right angle as if there is a hinge in the neck. I've seen that before in another egret. I'll probably goggle about egret necks. I took this photo at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

"The elegant Great Egret is a dazzling sight in many a North American wetland. Slightly smaller and more svelte than a Great Blue Heron, these are still large birds with impressive wingspans. They hunt in classic heron fashion, standing immobile or wading through wetlands to capture fish with a deadly jab of their yellow bill. Great Egrets were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds." - allaboutbirds.org
