Randle Reef in #Hamilton Harbour is one of the most contaminated sediment sites in the #GreatLakes after over a century of #pollution from manufacturing. The 60 ha site has high legacy polycyclic aromatic #hydrocarbons (PAHs) from petroleum refining, coal tar gasification, steel making, and sewage. The last cleanup phase is confining toxic sediment in a 6.5 ha engineered containment facility (ECF) lined by deep-driven steel sheet pile walls, which is then capped-sealed.

Let's talk #zooplankton nets. Why, on a large ship, do we use a net with very small diameter (0.4 m), but it is long (2 m)? Efficiency! These nets filter better, while not collecting *too much. #Eutrophic systems like #LakeErie clog nets with algae, so less volume is better. We target sizes using different Nitex meshes, most often 63 or 153 μm in the #GreatLakes. To measure volume, we use a flow meter mounted just off-center in the net mouth (know why?). #Science

One of our newest collaborative manuscripts, in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, on the populations of Mysis diluviana (opossum shrimp) within each of the #GreatLakes. Many 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 agencies involved: Cornell U, USEPA, NOAA, USGS, DFO, U Michigan. Mysis, because of their large size, are a very important food web linkage in almost all of the Great Lakes.

I doubt there are many who disagree that #microplastics in the #GreatLakes are a problem. The difficulty I have seen however is, while they are a pollutant, what exactly is the impact: ecological (interference), toxicological (transfer)? These authors claim a high "90% of Great Lakes water samples have *unsafe microplastic levels", but these particles are at very low densities, even compared to zooplankton, much less phytoplankton. Plastics are bad, but this bad? 🤷

One of my favourite Canadian bands of the 1990s, the #Odds, are back with a new album "Crash the Time Machine", which I really like. The track "Walk Among the Stars" is very catchy, with a hooky bass, and it includes the lyric:
