#GreatSmokyMountainsNationalPark has always been 'free'.

It was part of the agreement between the federal government and the state of Tennessee in order for TN to turn over some property that was originally state owned to become part of the federal allocation.

#GSMNP has, it seemed, found a workaround. You can drive through the park all you want, for free.

But you can't park for free anymore.

Ever wondered what the past land-use legacies may be in now protected highly valued biodiversity hotspots?

Margaret Woodbridge, a former PhD student in our group (now ORISE postdoc @ US Forest Service) studied how undisturbed forests differed from forests that regrew after intensive logging of a century ago in what is now #GreatSmokyMountainsNationalPark. She found that shrub distribution & abundance differed considerably between disturbed and undisturbed forests.
