I sneaked a little time in the park at the river's mouth (as a treat, after having had to run an early morning meeting).

While there, I saw two #grebes doing a mating display (mirrored dancing), so I thought I'd try to catch some on video. Of course, they stopped dancing the moment I started filming, but they did lead me to this. 😄

The charming bob-preening behavior of the Western grebe is so fun to watch (these two seem to still be in the rehearsal stage lol).

This is different from the more dramatic dancing/rushing mating ritual (in that the mirrored preening usually involves an already matched pair in a more relaxed state), but it still showcases these weird, lovely creatures' gift for synchrony.

It's a chilly #MarineLifeMonday, so it seems appropriate to recognize that #winter here in the Great #Northwest has its perks. On #PugetSound, those perks include #seabirds, like these #grebes and #gulls, which #flock to the protected, food-rich #waters of the #SalishSea. You don't even have to find a remote #shoreline to appreciate these #birds; these were spotted from the #fishing #pier in #Edmonds, just south of a particularly busy #ferry landing in a large #Seattle suburb.

Went to the South Island for Christmas: Gillespie Circuit, Mueller Hut, grebes at #Wanaka... Here's a trip report.

Like everyone in New Zealand and many people from overseas, we flew in to Queenstown. Got away from the huge hordes by going to Wanaka (small hordes) and Mount Cook Village (some visitors). Did many of the things we’d been planning: Gillespie Circuit, glacier kayaking, Mueller Hut. Also went rock climbing in Wanaka. #birds #grebes #SouthIslandNZ #mosstodon
