.@luis presenting our paper "Batching for Green AI" at #SEAA2023.
➡️ Green AI is more than model training: to design energy-efficient neural networks we must optimize them according to the system settings where they operate.

#AI #Environment #GreenAI: "Even discussions specifically devoted to ethical concerns related to AI (highlighting issues like bias, privacy violations, indiscriminate scraping to build training data sets, etc.) often fail to include environmental issues. When the White House announced last month that seven of the key companies developing AI had agreed to a list of voluntary commitments focused on protecting Americans’ “rights and safety,” the announcement said nothing about sustainability.
It did, however, mention “transparent development of AI technology,” as well as “broader societal effects.” Perhaps within those general terms we can locate some additional commitments to be required beyond those spelled out in the initial fact sheet: that the companies commit to disclosing the energy and water consumption involved in the development and deployment of their products, that they commit to educating the broader public and their direct clients about the environmental costs and that they commit to large investments in research focused on what some are calling “green AI,” which stresses energy efficiency as one of the criteria in evaluating models."

#Einladung https://goodimpact.eu/recherche/fokusthema/good-talk-das-live-event-ausgabe-02-23

If you are an AI/ML researcher or practitioner, how do you look at the increasing carbon footprint of ML models, and do you see "Green AI" as an important aspect for the future of AI development? Will the power of extremely large models always win over models with smaller footprint, or is it possible to find a balance between performance and energy efficiency?

This non-peer reviewed paper by Hugging Face measures the carbon footprint of training their new language AI model BLOOM: 24.7 tonnes CO2-eq.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2211.02001.pdf
When we consider the embodied emissions from the infrastructure, this figure goes up to 50.5 tonnes CO2-eq (≈2x).
The reported footprint still misses the carbon emissions of inference in production. The paper is a good starting point but we need a standard way to estimate and report these figures.
