@gecole Thanks the beds are great and I love having ryegrass covering the soil over winter. Other green manures are killed off by the cold but the rye hangs on in there. The soil is all the better for it.

@Pollinators No problem, I wanted to show the before & after and also how well the ryegrass covers the soil. There also appear to be more earthworms in the soil than there was in the autumn.

@BroadforkForVictory Thank you for sharing side by side photos. The ryegrass green manure is well done. Our vegetable gardens could always use more green after a row is harvested. . . To keep the soil teeming with life.

The raised bed at home is off and running. The over wintered ryegrass green manure is no more, added to the compost heap. The soil’s all the better for it and sowings of root crops are in (carrots, spring onions, radish, beetroot, onion sets, shallots).

Salad crops, leeks and some autumn/winter brassicas (kohl rabi, savoy, kale, purple sprouting broccoli) will also be grown in this bed.

January & February are going to drag.

My green manures have mostly been frost killed so I’ve marked out the beds for 2023 (75 cm wide with a 25 cm path in between). Bed lengths will vary on the plot between 5 & 8m.

Three beds are set aside for growing Yacon as a replant perennial. I’ll have another 15 beds to play around with.

Green manures were growing well into the first week of December. 10 nights of freezing temperatures (-4°C to -9°C) have knocked them back. Photographed after today’s thaw.

We plant green manure early in the autumn to cover the ground and encourage wildlife, etc. Leaving the soil bear is generally a bad idea as it encourages erosion and is no good for the soil, structure and life in the soil. We dig the green manure in in the spring and we can plant our crops then. .
