With its haunting melody, and the romantic myth that it was written by #HenryVIII as a love song for #AnneBoleyn, Greensleeves has remained popular over the centuries and today, is probably the best known of all #Tudor #songs.
However there is no proven connection to Henry VIII, and the earliest mention of the broadside ballad called #Greensleeves was not until September 1580, (some 33 years after his death). It was an immediate hit, and a number of imitations and parodies were produced in the following months and years.
Our recording uses the text from 'A Handful of Pleasant Delights', 1584 - the earliest surviving source. There are many verses, some of which contain lovely descriptions of #Elizabethan clothing and other aspects of #MaterialCulture
Richard de Winter: baritone
Robin Jeffrey: lute

RIP Mr. Harry Belafonte! The man who brought Calypso music to a new level.
I only found out about this one recently, but he did record a version of greensleeves back in 1958: https://youtu.be/B2pO85QyEGs

If you haven’t before, check out secondhandsongs.com and look up one of your favorites songs. You’ll get a pile of documented cover versions, IE https://secondhandsongs.com/performance/195164/versions
This page lists MORE versions of greensleeves than my own collection but mine will be more interactive, more detailed, and more INTERESTING. Plus I have plenty of versions not listed here

In 1966, The Beatles’ “Yesterday” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist or Instrumentalist. It had some stiff competition - a big band arrangement of Greensleeves by Gil Evans!
They both lost to Frank Sinatra, but still, pretty neat

My Greensleeves-ing has expanded into searching episodes titles in podcast directories and now I’m listening to two dudes talk about an over-dressed golf player nicknamed “Green Sleeves”.
(There’s over an hour left and I’m not gonna finish it)
BUT they did sample a version briefly and I identified it as this one by Karliene from 2019:

Here's a #Greensleeves for St. Patrick's day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiisrLkvD28
This rendition is sung by Irish Singer Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, one of the founding members of the group Celtic Woman. A harpsichord adds a very baroque-feel while a tin whistle provides counter melody

Today I found a version of Greensleeves from a Nine Inch Nails concert in 2018 (sort of):
It’s mainly pianist Mike Garson jamming out on the tune for a couple minutes before the band transitions into “Just Like You Imagined” - I think that counts!
Mike Garson was David Bowie’s long-time concert piano player and he’s done impromptu Greensleeves playing like this on stage before

RIP to guitarist Gary Rossington, the last original member of #LynyrdSkynyrd.
I wasn't aware of all the many lineup changes over the years, but in 2000, by way of pianist Billy Powell, they too made a version of #Greensleeves:

It's a dreamy little synth-piano rendition, non-too-flashy or Free-bird-y

I don’t have much experience as a #developer but I joined indieweb.social to join the community, learn out loud, get help along the way. I believe in the #smallweb and #openweb movements and will mostly be making this website from #HTML, #CSS and #javascript.
The internet can be a cool place and I want to add something good, something weird to it.
There are as many versions of this tune as there are people in the world, so follow this account to join the journey into #greensleeves!

So here's an interesting #BandcampFriday pickup:
It's #greensleeves on a piano with a robot reciting poetry over it. The whole album consists of public domain music plus another element, such as a dial-up modem or the sound of a literal dump truck.
Quite a listening experience!
Back to Greensleeves-ing this #BandCampFriday. This one thought it could hide from me, using a different name/rendition, but that tune there is #greensleeves:

A History Of Dub - The Golden Age (mid seventies - early eighties) CD. A real cool cheap promo cd from 1995. Released by #MunichRecords to promote the #dubwise releases on the #BloodAndFire, #Heartbeat and #Greensleeves record labels. I sold loads of this cd while working in the #GroovyMusic / #Mundial recordstore. Still a killer no filler compilation.

@swade That’s a lot of #Greensleeves! Is one of them Mannheim Steamroller? I like that one.
Heya! #introduction
I'm a 30-something IT worker from Western Massachusetts, current MIT employee. Keeping up with consumer tech (former #Apple Store employee) and hope to explore this emerging #fediverse / #indieweb scene.
I play #piano, mostly jazz and game covers, with a soft spot for Trinidadian #steelpan.
I have a collection of various versions of #Greensleeves 🟩 that I've been building since my teenage years - 438 renditions and counting!
Just happy to be interested or engaged here!

For anyone who feels that they've eaten too much, here is a
Carol for #ChristmasDay at Night: An anonymous 17thC #ballad carol describing many of the foods eaten at Christmas.
From New #Christmas #Carols, 1662.
In common with many #broadsideballads, this carol appear with lyrics but no music. Instead, instructions are given for the choice of melody - in this case, the popular tune, #Greensleeves.

Interesting.
Never thought about it but reading the lyrics it just seems like the lament of a someone (man or woman) who has been scorned by the one s/he loves.
Whether woman involved is the girl next door or a working girl doesn't much matter. It's still a timeless tune that pleasant to listen to (with or w/o lyrics) all of these many years later.
