Today's is the . This marine mammal can weigh 90,000 pounds and reach 49 feet in length. It also make a lengthy annual , travelling over 10,000 miles each year.

Two populations remain, both in the Pacific : a small, population in the west, and a recovered population in the east. Both populations spend summers feeding in the Arctic before migrating south to breed or give birth. The eastern population swims along the west coast of the Americas to reach Baja, Mexico. The gestational period of a grey whale is about one year, so freshly-pregnant whales must return to the Arctic and swim back to Baja to the following year to give birth.

Grey whales are filter feeders that swim on their sides, sifting small animals from the sea floor. Individuals show side preferences, with scrape marks and displaced barnacles on the side of their head that is usually dragged through sediment.

Threats to grey whales include disturbance from human vessels and habitat degradation due to infrastructure and climate change.
