Creating the cutscenes for Grimace's Birthday was an interesting challenge considering the colour limitations of the GBC.
I used a considerable amount of static sprites laid over the background to include more than 4 colours per 8x8 pixel tile.
The GBC can't render more than 10 sprites per horizontal line, so the celebration screen with all the characters in it was a serious puzzle, in particular!

Grimace's Birthday's traditional platforming levels were inspired by the likes of the Power Balloon powerup from SMW, the Kirby series, and non-other than Flappy Bird!

One of our main goals was to make sure people that may have never played a platformer didn't have too difficult a time, so the slower, more floaty Bubble Powerup is there to make the final level easier as well as add some variation to gameplay.

Working on Grimace's Birthday for the GBC for McDonald's was an amazing opportunity.

For the skateboarding levels, I was inspired by Tony Hawks collectibles like the video tape and SKATE letters and tried to translate those fun skating lines through a 3D space into a 2D one.

The second skateboarding level, with its multiple routes to the goal and springs to give the player quick vertical momentum, was inspired by the Sonic games.

Has anyone had the new Grimace Shake from McDonald's yet?

This is a new release that just came out this month and supposedly it's mixed berry flavored. This is their first new shake flavor since 2017 and I'm curious if it's any good from anyone who has had a chance to try it.
