It's heeeeere. First two films of the #grimmfest Weekender have been great. First time of watching The Hallow on the big screen, with an ace Q&A with he Director. Sleepwalkers up next.
Previously played at #grimmfest is VESPER, a tremendously realised fantasy with real-world parallels.

It’s a very grey morning in Manchester, but I’m really looking forward to a day of horror movies at #MonstersAndMovies #Grimmfest
The thing is... : in John Carpenter's THE THING (1982) "nobody is all man (or all woman), and no one can fully escape the alterity within". A stone cold classic, screens 8.30pm at #Grimmfest, ODEON Manchester Great Northern #InDreamsAreMonsters #Horror #Antarctic #MasculinityInCrisis https://projectedfigures.com/2018/04/03/the-thing-1982/

I'm off to the cinema over the weekend for a festival of monster movies courtesy of #grimmfest. Likely to be some discussion of wolves, demons and more on that hashtag - will try and remember to CW for content and/or spoilers!
Final film of the day (for me) was 'Candyland'. I think all I can say is that it was made by a white American man. Clearly not a barrier to a good film being made, but it felt like it had less to say than the earlier films. Felt like being mansplained to about what it's like to be in a difficult social place rather than being forced to feel it.
On its own merits not really a bad film, but kind of like watching an ITV cop show straight after watching The Wire.
Fourth film of the day was 'Last cut' a loose french remake of 'last cut of the dead'. Can't recommend it enough; probably one I would have skipped at home on the small screen, but so glad I caught it at the cinema. Quite self-referential, but in an affectionate tribute kind of way. Clever, funny and unexpectedly warm. Loves it.
Third film (Pussycake) unfortunately cancelled as they didn't get sent a version with English subtitles, but I'll definitely be checking it out when it hits Shudder.
Second up was 'Meglomaniac', an altogether more extreme movie, but one that remained firmly in the art camp. Strong links with the two films as they explore the effects of external factors on mental health and outlook, but this one was way darker. A few walk-outs during the darker scenes, but (IMHO) they missed out on a really gripping and intense end to the film.
Two films into #grimmfest this Friday, and what a start! First off was the Spanish film 'Piggy' which I was a bit skeptical of at first but turned out to be an absolute classic in the making. Brilliantly acted and tackling it's subject in a very visceral (but never exploitative) way. One I will definitely revisit as there was much more to it than I got out of a single watch.
