A question for enthusiasts: have any of you tried using to pick up a language that's really different from any you knew before? If so, how did that work?

Reason I'm asking is, I'm trying the course and the experience has been so bad I'm tempted to develop a course myself rather than continue

(Guarani grammar is fundamentally different from PIE languages and I can't see how a word-for-word translation approach could ever work, but perhaps I'm missing sthg?)
