Yesterday we got to talkin about great guitarists so I thought I'd spend today sharing some songs that feature amazing guitar work or solos. First up is this gem of a song from Mr. Steven Wilson featuring Guthrie Govan on lead guitar and an incredible solo that I believe was recorded in one take (and possibly with a broken string moment mid-solo). Warning - it's a long proggy song, but oh so worth it.

Early on he’d become known as the guy who could play all the Wakeman or Emerson stuff. Jim would eventually play in several bands, first with me, and later with Steve, including a stint with SKB.

Any who stuff out there?

I'm looking for a practise or other appropriate device that:
- produces a decent tone (I don't need crazy amounts of effects or cab simulations, but a bit of flexibility is nice for experimentation)
- can be connected directly to my laptop for recording purposes
- whilst simultaneously listening to what I'm playing via headphones

Bonus points for:
- size (smaller is better; I don't have space or the required neighbours to set up a full rig & record via mic)
- simplicity (I want to plug in a USB cable & hit record. I don't want to have to get out a ton of gear first and then pack it away again afterwards, and I have no space to leave it all out)
- sound quality (does not have to be studio/stadium-quality, but I'd like to not be embarrassed about sharing the results with other people (my own ability to play notwithstanding)
- price (I'm not _completely_ broke, but...)

@MTP well I'll be xxxxxxxd, it works a treat! Just the tiniest amount on the old digits lasts for ages and I would say the finger/string squeaking (predominantly on the E, A and D of course) is reduced by, I dunno, 80 - 90%?

I don't mind a little bit of string noise but if the nylon strung is up front in a 'full band' soundscape it just sounds out of place if it's very audible. Happy bunny, and the half kilo will probably outlive me! 😊

Any who play 6 or 7 string or have any experience with D'Addrio NYXL strings? I've been using Elixr or DDT for years, but I'm wanting something new.

Styles would be on the heavier side, both clean and distorted.

im also working on bass and extended range guitar (7, 8, and 9 string) versions. with and without frets and with and without fanned frets. they arent quite ready for the limelight, but will be soon.
