I've discovered a major blindspot. I brought The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida (by Shehan Karunatilaka; it won the #BookerPrize last year) on my trip and it takes place during the Sri Lankan civil war, and I'm like, what?

So now that I'm home I crack open Wikipedia and holy civilian massacres, Batman. It went on from 1983 till 2009, including during the 2004 Tsunami, and I'm sure we were all too distracted by the #GWoT in the 2000s but before that, you'd think I'd have been more aware of it. Especially during the whole End-of-History-90s.

The first major "international incident" right before #GWOT was the #HainanIsland event in Spring 2001 - PRC made out like bandits from this, but the action (SIGINT missions over international waters close to/around areas of military significance) continue to this day.... Taking that balloon out 15+ miles from the coast of US would've been VERY INTERESTING.
