Spells: By the book this seems risky Realistically this is written to keep the power creep down. Honestly the rules are a little antagonistic (in the original #Gygax #tome ), but when there is real communication between the player and GM, an in depth reading of the pre existing spells good faith attempts to make spells that fit in with other spells of the same level, most of the time there is a pretty good chance of success.

@deinol Also, my feeling is that the default mode of any #OSR game (and presumably #NSR ) is #exploration. And it's not always about just going to new places. It can be about making any new discovery or learning some new fact. I think #gygax hated people reading the Monster Manual because he wanted the players to #explore the monsters and discover new things about them as they played. So you could very easily imagine a campaign where the PCs are called upon to explore the NPC cast.
