Canadian researchers estimated that this season, a flu shot halved the risk of infection that required medical care. With #H3N2, this year's dominant virus, that's actually very good. VE in H3-dominant years is often below 40% — it is typically the weakest link of flu shots. CDC hasn't yet released a flu vax VE estimate for this year, which puzzles me. The study is in Eurosurveillance.

With #influenza rampant in the U.S. (red line graph), this is a good time to mention that the N.American #vaccine strains in the shot are excellently matched to H1/H3 viruses circulating. Here in the U.S. the CDC reported flu cases are <1% FluB. For FluA (~99%) we have ~21% that are #H1N1 pdm09 clade related, and ~77% #H3N2 all of which are isotyped as exclusively being clade 3C.2a1b.2a.2.
