I start volunteering with #HabitatForHumanity Victoria today. I committed to at least 20 hrs/month to help them out on projects & at their ReStore on Oak St.

So sad to hear President Carter has entered hospice care. He did so much humanitarian work after his presidency. I got to shake his hand when I was a little kid, and I remember him being very gracious-even after my mother insisted she was going to shake his hand “come hell or high water” as the secret service was trying to round him up and move him onto the next stop. Know what's even more depressing than working from home? Death, disease, war, famine, and civil unrest, all caused by climate change. And if you think your allergies are bad now, just wait until climate change really starts kicking into high gear.

At this point, I think we all need to be willing to sacrifice a little of our own personal comfort in order to prevent the literal apocalypse. If that means most office workers won't have as many opportunities to socialize, and they feel a little lonely as a result, I'm sorry, but that's a 100% acceptable tradeoff in my opinion.

If some folks really need that social interaction in order to stay sane, I would suggest they join a local #BookClub or #CyclingClub, start volunteering with #HumanRightsCampaign, #HabitatForHumanity, etc. There are plenty of other (arguably better) ways to get your physical activity and social time besides commuting by car to work in an office.

While some people were doing god knows what in 2010 I and fellow volunteers were building #habitatforhumanity houses in Birmingham with an octogenarian name Jimmy Carter. So when some say we should put our over 75yro out to pasture I ask. How many houses did you help to build?

In 1990, I was a reporter for a weekly community newspaper in #SanDiego when #JimmyCarter and Rosalynn and #HabitatForHumanity came to town. They built several homes for the needy in southeast San Diego and another 100 in #Tijuana (Miracle on the Border - “El Milagro en la Frontera”). I didn’t get to interview the Carters, much less meet them. But I did see them at work on the houses. I still have this cap to remember those days and their selflessness.

Sure, after his presidency, Jimmy Carter could have just retired to a country club, put out petty diatribes insulting his "enemies," and played lots of golf. Instead, he decided to help build living spaces for people who needed them. He talked the talk and then walked the walk.
