There are aphids on the stem, surrounded by the "barn". They're visible in some of the photos in this iNaturalist observation.

I checked them out today. They're still at it!

I found this weird growth on the arrowwood in my backyard. At first I thought it was a gall. Closer inspectno showed it was constructed from small bits of detritus along a stem.
I aso discovered that it's occupied by ants! I don't think they built it. They were tending aphids on the stem within the shlter of the nest.

As gardeners, we can:
- Plant cultivars of known sex, or
-Plant multiples, as many individual plants as possible.
Where space is limited, we can:
- Grow a male in a container. I've done this with my winterberries, cultivars I bought as a matched pair.
- Recruit your neighbors to grow some! Plants and pollinators care about proximity, not property lines.

@redcrew
This is true of a lot of desirable native plants, such as hollies. Others, such as Viburnum and paw-paw, need a population to set fruit well, or at all. It's a reproductive strategy to minimize inbreeding and increase genetic diversity and adaptability in a community.

My front garden this afternoon (Sunday). Nearly all the plants visible here are native to NYC and the region. You can see one of habitat signs on the wall of my porch.
Plants in bloom in the photo are (L-R) elderberry, Viola striata, Heuchera, sedges, sundrops, Elymus, Rosa carolina, Oenothera speciosa, and spiderwort.

One of my favorites, tiny and shiny.
These nest in rotting logs I set out in my garden for this purpose.

And this afternoon, I had an even more uncommon visitor to my backyard: a female magnolia warbler.
I've only seen one in my garden twice before, five years ago, and ten years ago! So I guess I was due for a quinquennial visit.
