I tell myself that those are all band-aid solutions and that a more comprehensive solution is needed with my own project. But realistically, and more selfishly, I would much rather work on #HabitatZero than anything else. I'm also very much aware that I'm completely unqualified to deliver what I envision. But I'm still brute forcing it, hoping to contribute _something_ useful back.

(if we're going to do that, we might as well have an open-source voice in there, and let anyone who can and wants to contribute to contribute)

I'm pretty convinced that there are tough times ahead. I do want to help. There are probably much better, more direct ways to treat the suffering of people right now and in the future than pie-in-the-sky dreams of #HabitatZero

The original idea for #HabitatZero came about in response to automation and it being in the hands of the few. I think we need distributed, democratic automation. Automation for the people. Decentralize the means of production. Whatever other catchy slogan you want. It then evolved in to a space colony prototype in response to incorporating the danger of climate change, and the possibility of becoming a multi-planetary species

I’ve got a bunch of text blobs about #HabitatZero (an #opensource project to research tech related to a #space habitat prototype for ideally up to ~10k people per habitat) that I am looking to distill in to nice, crisp copy for a landing page, and I’ve got a small budget to hire someone to help me with that. Are there any writers for #hire here that I could get in touch with for that? What’s the typical rate for this work (I’ve got some money, but I also don’t want to waste people’s time)?

Back pain is fading away, and last week in my apartment before I move out. Still have nowhere yet to move to (but I won’t be on the streets, don’t worry), but definitely looking forward to soon returning to a normal routine and getting back to working on #HabitatZero and projects like the #Funkwhale alternate front-end.

Monolithic domes are one possibility. Digging under is another, but digging introduces all kinds of problems. It’s generally cheaper to build up then it is down, and #HabitatZero likely won’t be different.

Likely this would be a giant concrete shell, either monolithic dome or more traditional rectangle building. But that’s what I’ve been calling the habitat’s “shell”. How big it would be to house 10,000 people comfortably, with all support systems, that’s still a huge question mark.

(Also sorry to real engineers, I’m a software dev, not an actual engineer with the ring and all that. You folks are the real deal. Replace engineer with technologist in that last post)

The goal of #HabitatZero is to build an open-source space habitat prototype, with a high standard of living, using open-source through and through.

There’s a lot we can’t simulate, like lack of gravity, and it’s easier to prototype on Earth than in orbit. But it’s still valuable to do for reasons I’ve outlined

@ultimape and yeah, #HabitatZero can’t emulate things like zero G and all the other stuff, but we can still build tools that are helpful (and also build it pretending we’re hiding from intense solar radiation and lack of atmosphere)

As for homeostasis, yep! That’s a really great way to describe the system, a homeostatic habitat!

That’s a big problem for #HabitatZero (well it’s a bigger problem for the world currently but yeah) #Water is so essential to everything we need and do, that in the habitat it will likely be a strained, scarce resource. So at this stage I’m thinking everything needs to be designed in a way to use as little of it as possible. Efficient water usage through and through. Water use should be a top metric for everything.

So, cotton, might be a problem. Which makes me wonder about alternatives.

I’ll start keeping a log of my thoughts, questions, experiments and outcomes on #HabitatZero and other projects here. Helps me summarize it, keeps me on track, and welcomes feedback.

I’ve decided to try scheduling my days on areas where I focus my attention and effort (in my limited time). While it’s easy to get caught up in my latest idea, #HabitatZero is still priority so 5 out of 6 days it’ll be my focus. 7th day is mandatory relaxing so:

Thur: #construction/#architecture/#environmentals
Fri: #waste management/#water
Sat: free project(#Layerspace,#Grapevine,#Antennas)
Sun: #relax

I’m torn between developing my #fediverse #Medium alternative, my #soundscape generator/audio environment simulator, finishing fixing #Antennas, or prioritizing getting information out there on #HabitatZero. Hm. So little time and energy, so many things to do. Oh, and I also need to finish parts of coding #Tetris for a work exercise.
