Welp, end of an era, #Habitica's chats have been discontinued.

I was a loyal user for years, and a moderator. I was a contractor for a while.

All I can say at this point is that there are far better task managers out there -- personally I find Amazing Marvin very helpful. As for the community, some of us have found lifelines via Discord; if you know me personally and would like an invite to the one I moderate (alongside long-time user Faranae), let me know and I'll nominate you for an invite.

It has been suggested that the #COPPA 2.0 bill might also be relevant. Having also been introduced in a recent committee meeting, this bill is as far from being made into law as #KOSA is.

The current belief of mine and people I've talked to is that #Habitica is using the "laws" as a scapegoat to prevent being criticized for their bad decision and lack of planning.

@rastilin @utopify_org Few people realize that it's open source, too. I just wish they'd put #Habitica on #Fdroid.

#Habitica has never been my thing but my partner runs her life with it and it’s one of her two most used social networks. Apparently, it’s melting down with huge functionality checks, alienating volunteer moderators and contributors. I can’t help thinking a Habitica-like network would be an interesting fit for #ActivityPub, different instances could run different RPGs (or do away with them), they could have their own guilds, challenges and parties and users could mix and match what they want.

I just ROASTED #habitica Development/Admin Team. Here's what I had to say.

While we are not currently sure which "new online safety laws" that #Habitica is alluding to in their official blog post, we have found a likely candidate that is the Kid's Online Safety Act (KOSA).

Suggesting that platforms utilize age authentiation to protect children, this act may threaten online privacy of ALL internet users and the potential censorship of political opinions from the internet.

Despite #Habitica claiming these systems to have been "used by a disporportionally small percentage of [their] player base," the Guild and Tavern systems have been a cornerstone of what #Habitica means to its community.

Removing such a feature on such short notice with little planning for the future is an unprofessional move that damages both the player base and HabitRPG Inc. itself.

The admins have decided that they are to discontinue Guilds and Tavern, the core player communication systems on #Habitica, by August 8th.

Only the Group (which is only available to players who paid for Group Plan) and Party systems will remain.

I still think #Habitica needs to be federated with ActivityPub. Just saying.

If anyone did happen to participate and want to talk about it, I guess #shanaquiBirthdayBash works as a hashtag. I honestly could use a pick-me-up, so I think I'll create my own bingo card for it soon!

My birthday's August 20th, so that's traditionally around the time that I'd check out what people said about it. Maybe this year it'll all be a bit flat because it's not how it used to be, but I thought it was worth putting something out there for anyone who did follow me from #Habitica.

Back on #Habitica, I used to use their challenge system as an excuse to give out gifts (usually the in-app currency/subscriptions). I'd set up a list of tasks, a task for each year of my life: fun things, self-care, community stuff... and people could do as many or as few as they liked.

I can't run that system here, but I've written a task list anyway since people said they'd miss it...
