An enormous complex of buildings with both government and personal functions. The photo on-site shows the Nymphaeum at the far end of the Canopus - an extended rectangular basin that celebrated the geographical extent and distinctive peoples and cultures of Empire - but all the villa's buildings showcased locations of particular significance to Hadrian.

Autumn AD 122 – Hadrian returns to Gaul and commemorates his horse and Plotina

Towards the end of AD 122, Hadrian left Britain and set sail for Gaul, travelling southward to Nemausus in Narbonensis before crossing the Pyrenees to Spain. His route would have certainly been along the via Agrippa from Bononia on the North Sea to Lugdunum, down the Rhone valley, and then along the via Domitia to Narbo Martius to the Pyrennes.
