I don’t envy Chris Lemonis. He shepherded the team to a national title in ‘21, but missed the postseason completely last year, and a repeat of that debacle is not going to be well-received by the fan base. MSU is a proud program with a lot of history, but only that one title. Not saying State fans expect a title every year, but any perceived slide from “elite program” status is not going to be tolerated in Starkville. Not in baseball. It’s just not.

Issue: what to do at catcher. In Sunday’s win, Lemonis moved Hancock back to first, and started freshman Ross Highfill behind the plate, to better results. Trouble is, this now creates a logjam in the lineup. 1st baseman Hunter Hines, our best hitter, got benched Sunday for Hancock. Hines is too good to leave on the bench. Put him in at DH, right? Then what do you do with current DH Bryce Chance, who’s been incredible? Tough decisions coming.

3 - Defense: Mediocre-to-bad on Friday. Tolerable on Sunday. APOCALYPTICALLY bad in Saturday’s total collapse that saw a 10-1 lead turn into a 14-13 loss. The good thing is, this is something that can be worked on. Our 2021 CWS champion team started slow defensively too.

And the good:
This lineup is dangerous top-to-bottom. Amani Larry had the most explosive debut I can ever remember from a Bulldog hitter. (And with our pitching, we’re gonna need him.)

Don’t know how many people on here follow #CollegeBaseball but anyway, here’s a few thoughts from Mississippi State’s opening weekend series:

1 - Luke Hancock, as great as he is at the plate and as a team leader, is unfortunately a liability at catcher. Can’t throw anyone out. Unbelievable that the coaching staff hadn’t recognized this.

2. Pitching is a problem. Again. We have some talent, but we’re going to end up relying on some unproven arms. Hope they get good fast.

Well, it wasn’t always pretty but the Bulldogs win big in the season opener, 11-2 over VMI.

The good: This lineup is full of dudes who just get on base. Amani Larry is the next Mangum.

The bad: Sloppy fielding. Got better as the game went on but pretty bad to start.

Too soon to tell: Pitching. Cade Smith was good as the starter, middle relief got kinda shaky, but newcomer Logan Forsythe shut VMI down in the 9th.

Good first outing, room to improve.

MSU baseball is a thing unto itself. We love football and basketball, sure, but baseball is first in the hearts of most State fans. There’s truly nothing like a game at the Carnegie Hall of College Baseball. Can’t wait, HAIL STATE!
