Lots of frost flowers in the forest this morning. Also known as ‘hair ice’.

Great example of hair ice found in the local wood. An ice formation that depends on the presence of a certain type of fungus in wet rotting wood.

Hair ice I came across this morning on a tree branch in Cairnhill Woods, just outside Glasgow.
Hair ice is relatively uncommon and only forms on dead wood inhabited by the fungus Exidiopsis effusa at temperatures just below freezing.
It consists of very narrow strands of ice crystals which give it the appearance of hair.
This is the first time I've ever seen hair ice in real life!

Spotted some "Hair Ice" fungi on our walk today. We had never seen it before and it looked just like snow-white hair growing on a dead branch.

@SallyMonster It just appears, the first heavy frost after a wet period. Here is another one. #HairIce #ice
Cold this morning. I don't think I've seen such good looking hair ice before. #hairice

When I’m not working in my own business, I’m helping out my other half with his. So, what better way to spend the day than standing in icy rivers in the Scottish Highlands, changing batteries. 🥶
As a reward, I spotted hair ice in Perthshire.

During our Hillwalking Club Christmas walk near #Dunkeld today we came across many bits of #HairIce in the beechwoods - especially on #Kingseat.
I have only seen it a couple of times before.
Here's some details about it...

We also saw some #HairIce yesterday. I only found out about it last year - it grows on rotting wood from broadleaf trees populated by a particular fungus (Exidiopsis effusa) and only under very specific conditions (temps slightly under 0°C/32°F and humid, mostly at latitudes between 45 and 55 °N). It is SUPER fun and weird.
