Rambam at the end of Hilchos Talmud Torah rules that a talmid chacham is not allowed to forgo his honour when it is challenged in public - he must pronounce "nidui" (a harsh punishment) on the one who belittled him, because his honour is the honour of the Torah.

Now, what would Rambam rule in a case where the belittler - for whatever reason - was unable to control his speech, and involuntarily blurtted out an insult?
The teshuvot for trans-inclusive Judaism are really interesting.
(Of course I immediately clicked on the circumcision and conversion one)

Neat #halacha question: can #Jewish Mastodon help?
There's debate, I know, on whether it's kosher to pray from a #siddur #app. For those who say yes (w/distractions turned off), what is the status of the phone while doing so? Is it #kodesh (holy), like an actual siddur is, meaning if you touch something that isn't you have to wash your hands before proceeding? Or is it just a phone, and only the app has special status? Got #sources? Answers here good, there even better!

As a Jew who grew up on a farm, one of my favorite halacha is that a farmer can't eat breakfast until our animals are fed. I don't know. They rely on us to eat and thus it is only fair that they go first.
It's just a very beautiful rule imo

So, American Reform #Judaism gives #Responsa and has a committee, but I can’t find out how that committee is decided/elected. Can anyone tell me? Thanks!

👉 Rabbi Abba said that Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: Two Torah scholars who listen to each other in the discussion of halacha, the Holy One, Blessed be He, hears their voice, as it is written (Song of Songs 8:13): “You who dwell in gardens, the companions heed your voice, cause me to hear it.” (Talmud, Shabbat 63a)

This was quite interesting.
I’m too tired to look it all up now but I have two basic questions. Maybe someone can help me?:
1. Who decides/how are the rabbis who make #Halacha decisions in Conservative Judaism selected (elected?). How does this fit with the history of rabbinic #Judaism?
2. Reform Judaism’s Responsa are similarly given by a selected/elected body? What’s the process?

Shavua tov!
So finally I finished the whole book as my #ShabbatReading. It’s really good. I recommend anyone who is interested in how #Halacha fits into Progressive/Reform/Liberal #Judaism. I found his argument very persuasive.

Oh my #Shabbat reading arrived from the UK today.

Finding this book, The Story of the Jews, very interesting for all sorts of reasons. The Elephantine Jews were into intermarriage and all sorts of things that wouldn’t be approved of by today’s strict Halacha.
Of course they still became victims.

Forgot the Alt Text on my previous Toot. So here it is:
“Reform Judaism may indeed have dispensed with the “rule of law,” the notion that every religious question must be submitted to rabbis for authoritative judgment, but it did not discard the law itself, the substance of halakhic observance as it has come down to us.”
From Mark Washowsky, Jewish Living: A Guide to Contemporary Reform Practice
Some people don’t like the term #queer and others find #bisexual problematic. I use both to talk about myself and have reasons.
https://sheepchase.net/2020/11/on-being-queer-and-being-bisexual/
As I learn more about #Judaism and #halacha I’m sure I’ll be thinking even more about the language I use in talking about identity, relationships and community.
