We basically need #HalfEarthSocialism!

If you were wondering, #HalfEarthSocialism is a radical proposal about what a just and ecologically-stable society would look like. There's even a book about it (not read yet, but it's in my to-read list for next year) https://www.half.earth/about
Good news from #Cop15, new deal aims to protect 30% of nature on Earth by 2030. Obviously that's not enough, we need #HalfEarthSocialism

Some nitpicks about the #HalfEarthSocialism game:
1) The starting point of the distribution of agriculture as 70% coming from industrial AG comes from disputed studies (that base "production" on monetary value not calories).
2) Stats and risks for fission power appear to be based on 1970's technology while the stats for wind are best-case scenario modern - both should have what would be built if projects started in the next few years.
3) Several techs that already exist require research?

Parry: lack of political imagination is a huge problem - "there is no alternative" has a lot to answer for - gamification, fiction may help foster more imagination. Vettese: neoliberal anti-humanist utopias - co-ordinating all of society and nature through the market - shows how powerful it is to have a utopian goal (even a bad one). "We can do better". #HalfEarthSocialism
People have played the game in education settings, including in classes with fairly young kids. "Way more people have played the game than read the book". Parry asks about the gamification of complex concepts and futures - is this part of achieving change? Vettese reflects on the problems of outsourcing (including crowdsourcing), investment structures - skeptical of gamification. But it's so important that people can visualise and understand so they can debate. #HalfEarthSocialism #EdTechodon

Political allegiances, behaviours and pathways (including dystopian ones) are modelled in the game, and the game expresses outcomes through future narratives and visualisations on the final game screen (that people have enjoyed sharing). #HalfEarthSocialism
One of the game creators, Francis Tseng, talks about the challenges of translating the many different kinds of possible solutions from the book into a playable simulation. Now talking about how they tried to attach numbers to various approaches to be able to model and estimate demand and outcomes. #HalfEarthSocialism
Heather Parry (chair) asks how this concept might lead to equitable solutions. Vettese says we have to engage with change everywhere - not just in the global south - in order to do the required things like rewilding. But this can be done through mechanisms like energy quotas that support living standards to rise where they need to. #HalfEarthSocialism
the book engages with a utopian tradition that pushes us to imagine a new society and its relationships to nature and technology. Fiction as thought experiment for imagining our way out of current conditions. And leaves room for fun. - Troy Vettese #HalfEarthSocialism
Troy Vettese: the appeal of socialism is that it enables us to choose what to produce, and to do it within planetary limits. But we also have to account for complexity when accounting for limits. "If we leave half of the world wild, we will solve a lot of problems" #HalfEarthSocialism
is #LiveTooting a thing? I’m going to attempt a few posts as I enjoy the Edinburgh Futures Institute “Half Earth Socialism” event currently livestreaming here: https://efi.ed.ac.uk/events/half-earth-socialism-ambitious-speculation-on-possible-futures/ #HalfEarthSocialism #EducationFutures
