It happened 105 years ago.
2000 killed, 9000 injured and a city in ruins.
But the descendants of the Halifax Explosion said it taught Haligonians about resilience and kindness.

A clip from my episode about The Halifax Explosion, which I released a year ago.
This clip recounts the moment of the explosion, and the immense devastation that it caused in Halifax.
It can be hard to visualize the 2.9-kiloton Halifax Explosion that killed 1,700 people today in 1917.
The 2020 Beirut Explosion in this video, which killed over 200 people was about 1/3 the size of the Halifax Explosion.
The first minute of the #HalifaxExplosion
- A blast takes out every building in a 2.6 sq-km area, killing 1,600 instantly
- Halifax Harbour's bottom is exposed to the air by water displacement
- A tsunami hits the land
- Red hot melted iron rains down on the city
105 years ago, the #HalifaxExplosion devastated the north end of Halifax: 2000 dead, 9000 wounded, and the city's industrial centre was destroyed.
It was the largest manmade explosion in the pre-atomic era.

Relics from the explosion can still be found many kilometers away from the explosion site.
@canadaehx covers it in a podcast here https://canadaehx.com/2021/11/27/the-halifax-explosion/

On this the 105th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion-you can faintly here the ships in the harbour sounding their horns to remember this tragedy-and a moment of silence from the people who have come this morning.

The Maple Leaf is at half mast today in Halifax - the twin anniversary of the #HalifaxExplosion and the #montrealmassacre. A sober day to remember in either case.

When French and Norwegian ships collided in Halifax harbour on the morning of Dec. 6th, 1917, the result was the largest man-made explosion at the time. Thousands died, thousands were injured. The Boston Red Cross and the Massachusetts Public Safety Committee provided help immediately after the disaster. They were the first to arrive. Nova Scotia has never forgotten. Today, as in years past, a Nova Scotian tree will be lit on Boston Common as Boston's official Yuletide tree. #HalifaxExplosion
