Also I tried a similar thing with UV82-HP and the same cable interface connected to a Raspberry Pi with various packet software, performance was terrible compared with higher priced radios. They are what they are, cheap fun.

This is a very tempting concept - especially since I already have a utility trailer upon which I could fashion a pretty large, light, cheap foamie camper.
