The latest generation of #supercomputers have more parallel computing power than ever before. How can we utilise these machines to run more insightful Earth System Models?
Using a case study with #HAMOCC biogeochemistry coupled to the ICON-O ocean model, our computer scientist Leonidas Linardakis shows that coarse grained concurrency is a versatile, simple and effective answer. Read more in their paper here: https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/15/9157/2022/

ICON-Coast encompasses all #coastal areas around the globe within ocean-biogeochemistry model #HAMOCC naturally accounting for two-way coupling of ocean-shelf feedback mechanisms at the global scale.
Results are more realistic (compared to coarser MPI-ESM) in representing a number of variables: the position of the #tidal front in the coastal ocean and the strength of the #seasonal #stratification.
This enhances the realism of the modeled ocean #CarbonCycle.
