After all these years and recent new #handheldpc like the #ClockworkPi #DevTerm or #uConsole this litte embedded #Linux powered device is still the winner in comparison for me. Battery lasts more than twice as the other two, lighter, better to type on, faster in terms of real world usage b/c of bloated linux these days...

nice little device with very clicky keys, great housing but way to little battery
power for a #RaspberryPi Compute Module and not so great wifi. You can get about 3
hours battery life with wifi on.
so all in all a real (bulky) replacement for my old zaurus ;)

It runs off two AAA batteries which can last up to a month or two. The monochrome UI is controlled by a stylus, and it uses a simple handwriting system called Graffiti.

Bueno, acá va mi humilde contribución al #viernesdeescritorio #nec #pocketpc #handheldpc con una NEC MobilePro900 de 20 añitos, corriendo JLime en un CPU de 400MHz y 64MB de RAM.

Ayer me llegó esta hermosura del 2003. Una NEC MobilePro 900 con Windows CE, pantalla color DSTN 64MB de RAM/64MB de ROM y un procesador Intel XScale PXA255 de 400MHz. Tiene slot para tarjetas PCMCIA II, 1 puerto USB, slot para tarjetas Compact Flash y un modem de 56k. El teclado es la gloria absoluta. Pesa unos 830gr y la batería le dura unas 8 o 9 horas + una batería extindida de 18 horas de duración. Si bien tiene pantalla táctil resistiva, esto no va en demérito del teclado, que es posiblemente el mejor y más cómodo que haya tenido un handheld PC de esta época, simplemente el táctil/lápiz reemplaza al mouse o touchpad. Dentro de las Handheld PCs de la época, tales como la HP Jornada 720, ésta era una de las más grandes quedando al límite del handheld form factor. Es una belleza, su procesador XScale es la implementación de Intel de la arquitectura StrongARM desarrollada por DEC en sus orígenes, con un consumo medio de unos 500mW y 1.5W máx con tecnología Intel SpeedStep que era más potente que los modelos competidores de HP que ofrecían CPU XScale a 200MHz y menos memoria RAM. A lo largo de los años las comunidades de aficionados a las handheld PCs han sobrevivido en foros y sitios con repositorios de software y programas. Looks like the GPD Win 4 could be a very good alternative to the Steam Deck, which I find a bit lacking in the screen, CPU power, and comort (for people with small hands) along with a more practical size. The Steam Deck is just way too big.

I guess this will make a pretty go on the go machine for SSH, when you need it with the built in keyboard.

It looks like opening the device up to upgrade the SSD may be a challenge, although I have an iFixit kit.
