‘I am not interested in telling people to make furniture to sell. I only teach to preserve the craft in living people and to make for themselves, family and friends.’
– Paul Sellers
That’s the only reason I’m in #woodworking, be it furniture or other. And while Sellers is in my top five people to learn techniques from, Chickadee is who lit my fire for #handtools.
‘I venture to say that amateurs using hand tools now outnumber professionals using hand tools at ten thousand to one.’ – Sellers
So my collection of Record Planes is complete for my needs.
Can't wait to try out the router plane and jointer. Jointer probably will need sharpening.

J'ai terminé mon premier gros projet, la construction d'un rabot en bois ! Malheureusement il ne fonctionne pas bien du tout 😅 , mais j'aurais appris beaucoup de choses ! 1/

Really good to get back in my workshop for a couple of hours this afternoon. It has been way too long!

As a hand tool woodworker while planning: it won't be a bit deal to take care of this large desk top.
As a hand tool woodworker after large desk top glue up: I should become friends with someone who owns a wide belt sander.
Archaeologists Keep Unearthing Mysterious 'Giant' Prehistoric Hand Tools
"There's no evidence that people at this time had much bigger hands... which makes it hard to imagine how the tool could have been easily handled."

First time peening a scythe today. Peening a brand new 70cm blade took a while, but at least I learned a ton. Before and after pictures included. Mowed grass well after, so I'm calling it a success. #gardening #handtools
Next step on the tool wall: organising files and rasps.
Flea markets are a great source of old rusty files waiting to be cleaned up and going again.
Wire wheel to get the grime off, a WD40 bath for rust removal, and re-waxing the handle is usually all that's needed.
This weekend's loot is the four hand rasp on the top right. Two flat and two half-rounds rasps in a compact package, for 0.50€. ☺️
Rabbet plane vs Rebate plane, we know how English speakers have different names for tools that cut a recess along the edge of a board. Linguistic evolution across the pond.
But why do the French call those "Guillaume"? Anyone know?
Tool wall update: I made some holders for my chisels (bench and mortise).
There's a nice spot in the middle for my joiners mallet. ☺️
oh yeah there’s no question - this was originally blued. and now it’s blued again. ^_^
My first #handtools #woodworking video is out!
Restoring a rawhide mallet:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UQomLjyQes
On the todo list for the next one:
- Ditch the 15 years old camera, and use my phone that shoots 4K instead.
- Lights are good, use more of those.
- Get better at editing.
Restored/cleaned up rawhide mallet.
The boiled linseed oil and paste wax finish made the outer rawhide layer look translucent, it should cure slowly and harden with time and use.
Happy with the result, looking forward to "persuading" holdfasts with it.
Flea market find of the day: a rawhide mallet/hammer.
It's grimy and gunky, but it should make a good user, especially to bang on metal holdfasts.
There are three outer layers of definitive rawhide, but the core seems harder, will investigate.
My garage flooded with last night's storm (evidence on the wall in the background).
Fortunately, I was in the garage when it started, and managed to vacuum away most of the water (about 100L) before it made serious damage.
Time to move all the tools away from the moisture and quickly learn masonry to attempt a fix, sigh.

A curiosio for you. Following are three classes of steel quality offered by a tool manufacturer in 1932:
- Superior Quality (SQ)
- First Quality (FQ)
- Extra Quality (EQ)
That is all you get. :)
What do you think is the order from good to best? (It’s not as obvious as it may seem.)
I’ll confirm/reply when the poll is over.
Is using a 3D printed jig considered "cheating" in #handtools #woodworking ?
I'd say who cares, the result is what matters: all my hand-drilled 45° holes are parallel, and I'm happy.
Am I taking this #savetheelectrons thing too far? What are your thoughts?

Here's a better view of the 3D effect, and the final result after (re-)applying a boiled linseed oil and paste wax finish.
#handtools #woodworking #carving
Second attempt at carving, with more minute details (getting to know my tools' limits) and recessing for a better 3D effect.
This time I took the work higher by clamping a hand screw into the vice, much more comfortable.
To get a consistent recess depth around tight spots, I made a quick router plane out of a Stanley #50 1/8" plough blade.
