As best I've been able to put together, the earliest haniwa were pots and other dishes, possibly to hold ritual offerings or similar. The round stands that they were placed on became the round haniwa, with other types of objects sitting on top in place of the bowls, etc. These got more and more elaborate through the end of the kofun period.

Truly fascinated at the concept of wooden "haniwa". Clay statues, especially the cylindrical ones that give haniwa their name, are well known, but that isn't the only thing that topped the ancient mounded tombs. In Kyushu, stone figures were popular, and stone stone figures have also been found near kofun in the Asuka area of the Nara Basin. This is the first time I've really seen wooden figures.
