For takes us on a walk through the centre of Gdańsk in Poland.
While admiring the Hanseatic style buildings with their ornate façades and gables this window caught my attention, the adornment is certainly not from that period.

If you give all your attention to the Town Hall when you visit the Rathausplatz in , you are looking the wrong direction! The "House of the Black Heads" was rebuilt in the 1990s. A guild hall on this site had existed since the 14th century, marking Riga's participation in the League and other trade networks. The statue of Roland is a nice grace note from the past, too.

The Small Guild hall of , recalls the rapid growth of trade across the Sea in the early years of the "Livonian Confederation." The German Crusaders who arrived in the 13th century were accompanied by traders (such as members of the League). Amber, furs, and amber were soon flowing into Europe!

Oosterlingen Square in was the site of the League's palace in the city. The building was so sumptuous that it was featured in the "Seven Miracles of Bruges," a 16th century painting celebrating the city's highlights.

Today, only some of the foundations remain, incorporated in a hotel.

For centuries, was a critical port, with substantial connections to the League and other networks. House Bouchoute incorporates a compass to specify the current wind direction, enabling merchants to know which ships could sail on a given day.

I love a beautiful stained glass window and this circular one is in the Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Lübeck, Germany. There is a painted date above it of 1655 but I don't know if this window dates from then or not.

For 600 years, from 1259 to the 1850s, the League of Baltic traders owned a piece of prime London waterfront. They initially took it by perhaps medieval cannon-based influence and finally sold off to a . Cannon Street railway station still sits there. It's likely one of the first places hoppy beer could be tasted in England. From the archives (2016): "The Steelyard, Stillyard, Stylyard and Spelling" abetterbeerblog427.com/2016/04

The start of hoppy beer in England is an interesting question. It was brought in as finished beer through depots like Hull and London as early as the 1200s but when did local brewing develop? The early 1500s is often cited but I've shared a record of hops coming to the trading port of in 1480. Turns out immigrant brewers made with there over 30 years before. Hundreds of years before the first cask of hit a ship’s hold, hopped was pushed on north-western Europe by the cannon wielding merchants of the League who set sail from the Baltic. In Bristol in #1384, the strange imported beer was “the new drink promoted aggressively by north German merchants.” From the archives (2019): “Another Brief Update On That Nagging Beery Bristol Question…” abetterbeerblog427.com/2019/01
