Caligae, the Roman hobnailed sandal. It is lethal on smooth surfaces but great on any other rough surface. They are quite heavy and the soles are fairly rigid. The upper is made of a single piece of leather sewn together at the heel. I don’t wear socks but there are references to socks. Initially you can expect blisters but your feet harden up quick.
