The question of whether consciousness can be explained by materialism is one of the most challenging and controversial issues in philosophy and science. However, many philosophers and scientists argue that consciousness is something more than just physical, and that it poses a hard problem for materialism. They claim that materialism cannot account for the qualia, the intrinsic qualities of conscious states. mindmatters.ai/2023/08/does-co

Consciousness is the hard problem of philosophy. It is the subjective experience of being aware and feeling sensations, emotions, and thoughts. How does consciousness arise from physical processes in the brain? How can we explain and measure consciousness? Consciousness is the mystery of existence.

Like how the ways to encode an image in a computer with 1s and 0s is subjective to the application using it. And they are all translatable because they all represent the same thing.

And the fact that image encoding being multiply realizable doesn’t imply we cannot know how any encoding algorithm works, just that we’ll need to do work to figure out each one.

Chalmer’s “hard” problem seems to assume that all people have the same subjective experience when, say, seeing the colour “red”.

I don’t think that has (or can be) shown.

The commonality of all qualia is that we’ve been taught to call them the same thing.

This means to me, that the hard problem is just a “so what?” problem.
