I am watching the for the first time, and I found it kind of cool, especially the efforts to make it realistic . I wonder if the novel worth the read, is there something more to discover there? Has anyone an opinion about it?

I just finished by and, as usual, I'm left with a hurty brain but also an intriguing story.

Here's an intro to it: gregegan.net/SCALE/SCALE.html

So, yeah, wild premise that's not fantasy it's (very) :

gregegan.net/SCALE/01/ScienceO

(WARNING - heavy physics in that linky.)

So there's all that but the actual story is far more about the human condition, politics, fear, love, community. Egan's use of scale is an ingenious invention that will make you ponder 'what if.'

Currently reading R.E. Stearns' Barbary Station, which I picked up so as not to read the second in the series first. I'd bought the second one sometime in the past two years and it kept wanting me to read it... Anyway, I'm reading in the correct order, and taking my time with it. If you want a peek at the story, here's a Tor link:

I'm reviewing XX by Rian Hughes.

I read it for a book club I'm in, enjoyed it at first, then developed increasing misgivings as I went on...

to Kristine Smith's CODE OF CONDUCT, hard available again from Book View Cafe. And the series intro has an intro price. :)

Intrigue, genetics, betrayal, great alien race--this book launched Kris and snagged her an Astounding Award for Best New Writer.

@gregeganSF is one of my favorite authors, and has used the concept of time-reversed physics in a couple of books & stories. I just ran across an old blog post of mine in which I try to answer: "what does cosmology look like for the time-reversed universe, and what are their 'big problems'?" You're welcome to read my ill-informed blog post emergent.unpythonic.net/014899 but I'd also love your ideas.

Laurence Manning's 1935 scifi novel World of the Mist attempts to probe the fringes of human knowledge of how the universe works, especially the existence of other dimensions and other universes, based on the state of knowledge in 1935.

It gets seriously weird, and it's pretty good.

Neutron Star is a 1968 short story collection which contains some of Larry Niven’s earliest Known Space Stories.

A good introduction to the Known Space tales. There’s a strong hard SF element, there are touches of humour and there’s danger and adventure.

Old-fashioned high-concept hard SF but with plenty of characteristic Larry Niven touches. Great stuff.

A Gift from Earth, an early (1968) Larry Niven Known Space novel. He's thought of as hard SF but in this case he's also interested in the social and political implications of technology. This is also a dystopian novel of sorts.

Interesting as an SF novel in which faster-than-light travel is impossible. The setting is bizarre- a plateau 40 miles above the surface of an otherwise uninhabitable planet.

Does anyone have good examples of that explores the concepts of alien software? I'm thinking of something like 's , but where there's a little more meat on the bone of what a truly alien approach to computation might be like?

The Wreck of the River of Stars by Michael Flynn - This tale of an obsolete magsail craft in Jupiter orbit is sort of Dark Star crossed with a deep dive into an ensemble cast of tragic misfits that, though in some ways caricatures, ultimately show everything that can go wrong with just plain being human in an implacable, uncaring universe. Flynn's prose often transgresses into purple, but for me, that's part of what makes it so tasty.

The Flight of the Aphrodite by @ComradeMorden - 2001 meets Dark Star in Jovian orbit, but without the need for a confused AI, just a bunch of confused humans in an untested environment leading to all sorts of tragic shenanigans. I have some minor quibbles, but overall this is a stellar effort at tackling remote crewed space exploration without forgetting that we would be just so much meat adrift in a complicated tin can.

Aphrodite's honour has been restored, along with its 4.3⭐️ rating! 231 now on the amazons, and even though it's not going to beat Gallowglass to 300, (295 with an average of 4.3 as well), I'm immensely happy with how this is finding an audience.

Go up, travel well! @bookstadon
