Harlock might be the first case of the "3 episode rule". First couple were stylish but the kid is awful, and we never saw the crew, or what they're *doing*. Ep 3, we meet the enemy, meet the entire crew, they actually have a plot that advances! Just jumps from nothing to 100%.

Been watching the Harlock Saga on DKUTV, which is a weird Ring Cycle adaptation*.

Freya's rape is off-screen, Mimir's a chick, there's no second generation, Sigfried's instead a random space pirate, "dragons" are space slimes. Only plays the Ride of the Valkeries, not the rest of the opera. Still pretty good.

One of the things I truly loved about Leiji Matsumoto's work was just how utterly devoid of logic it could be.

Train through the stars? Absolutely. Pirate captain piloting his ship by standing alone in the void at a ship's wheel taken directly from an 18th century tallship? Fucking yes.

I am surprisingly upset that he's gone.
