@rotnroll666 Recently, the community forked #Terraform because #Hashicorp switched out their #OSI-approved #FOSS license with their own license terms. I'm not officially taking sides, but if people don't like the current stewardship of Turbo, Rails, et al. then they can fork anything from the point where it was under a FOSS license if they have enough community support to maintain it going forward.

Following #hashicorp license change announce, #OpenTF is created to fork #Terraform, but what about #Packer, #Vagrant which I use, or even #Vault or #Consul and #Nomad?

Well, until about five minutes I was a bit "meh" about HashiCorp's license changes. And waiting to see whether another shoe would drop.

Now I'm more WTF?! after the Terraform registry ToS change.

I mean, really? Even Docker didn't forbid access to DockerHub for other OCI implementations.

And what do they think the outcome of this is? In which universe does this do any good for them? Most providers are 3rd party. OpenTF will probably have their own registry in no time.

HashiCorp got the wrong message from the Terraform fork by OpenTF 🤦 and is doubling down on being an ass.

They changed their ToS to state:

"You may download providers, modules, policy libraries and/or other Services or Content from this website solely for use with, or in support of, HashiCorp Terraform. "

My money is on #hashicorp, not on #opentf.

@n0toose Having a honest relationship with contributors and users is essential. To me the difference is that #hashicorp failed this utterly, and changed projects after the fact to a license that benefits them alone. This also is why I think CLA's are a dangerous practice.

@n0toose the fear remains gitea, ltd, will pull a #Hashicorp and become a dead-end, so that fork seemed pre-emptive.

The #BSL should be called the Business Selfish License. In the end, by not permitting anyone else to benefit from their code, yes, gasp, including potential competitors, they effectively discourage outside contribution to their own code base, only to have it wither and die as they will loose control of their own market to forks like #OpenTF . In effect, #Hashicorp itself has caused what it seems to have feared most. Self inflicted #fail .

Terraform is now OpenTF, if you want to continue using #opensource #foss version. They're planning to join @linuxfoundation.

Similar to what happened to #ElasticSearch : #HashiCorp has changed the license for #Terraform - apparently to make more money - then someone starts a new fork and we have two different versions. Will we get OpenForm and TerraForm now, like OpenSearch and ElasticSearch? 🤨
