@AlanBaxter you got me to follow you thanks to this hashtag heavy post, so working as intended.

I remember someone else already posted this article, but I can't find it because I didn't bookmark the Toot.
Tech Journalism Doesn’t Know What to Do With Mastodon
The articles talks about how Mastodon isn't "a company" and was designed with a different set of values than a commercial, capitalist venture.
It doesn't really touch on the very real differences in how the platform works that make it more difficult out-of-the-box to navigate.

If I were advising a journalist on how to get their stories visible on Mastodon, I'd say two things:

  • Hashtag the shit out of your content
  • Get as much content as you can into a single Toot

It's not "easy" to find what you want on Mastodon. The system doesn't have an algorithm to learn what gets the most clicks from you. It won't promote toots or people.
You have to curate your own list of users to follow (or block), hashtags to follow, and filters to set. And you cannot do that without exploring the content. There isn't a pre-filled list someone can give you that will be exactly what you want or need.

Mastodon also seems less friendly when trying to read content that is broken up among multiple Toots. When I see 1/20 or whatever, I generally skip it, because I don't have a simple way to view the entire thing as a single thread.
I suppose you can reply to your own Toots to keep them grouped but, if others are replying, as well, that might get noisy and messy.

I have to keep Mastodon up all day long or I risk missing breaking news.
Looking for anything more than 12 hours old that doesn't have a good hashtag is often impossible.
I know I saw jokes about people saying something like

.
And that's honestly not a bad idea if every word is something that someone might want to search for.

I know but it's so easy for meaningful Toots to get buried.

Some people decry the absence of Quote-Tooting, but what would that be used for that Boosting and Replying does not already accomplish? Quote-Tooting would elevate your commentary of perhaps something as insightful as "This!" to the same level of the original Toot and it breaks the conversational flow.

Don't you just love it when you finally figure out how to do something in (in this case, a heavily back-lit subject with dramatic skies as a background, to bring out all the details of the subject without blowing out the background or foreground), then suddenly realise you should have left for work 10 minutes ago, and you're still sitting there in your boxers...

This is so, so close to what I want - and yet I can't figure out how to get that last little bit.
I can't figure out why it seems ever so slightly out of focus either, as the original was fine in digiKam... photog.social/media/G4Rv5niqGq
