I love ! I use @stefanbohacek.online's Fediverse Explorer to search them all the time. (fediverse-explorer.stefanbohac). It would be nice if something like that was the default search experience.

I think a lot of it stems from Mastodon users wanting to be searchable and discoverable but the only way to opt-in to this is unfortunately by using a lot of hash-tags. If toots were searchable this wouldn't be necessary.

The universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts which I've been trying out and it's great. I'm all for discoverability without having to use hashtags as long as it respects those who choose not to be.

I'm hoping to see adoption of a way to fulltext search being implemented soon. 😊 It's being discussed over on GitHub.

Is there a hashtag for people who just want to post dumb things about daily life? Somehow I ended up following really smart people with important things to say.

Oh huh! I hadn't realised that it *IS* possible to have an additional hashtag search column without actually following it. (Following the tag would clutter your normal Home timeline.) Do not click Follow for the tag but instead open Settings for the column and Pin it, then Settings again to add other tags if you want. An example I recorded:

@MeidasTouch Hey! !

You need to use because doesn't allow full-text search, only . If you want to about , you to use !

(OK, I admit this toot was a little over the top but you get the point)

I have wondered which posts I see when I search a hashtag (or if it's in a column, or I follow it...). This flowchart (axbom.com/mastodon-tips/#flowc) by @axbom seems to say that the search scope is the local instance + federated timeline. Posts get to the federated timeline if someone on my instance follows the tooter or boosted or replied to the toot; or if the instance uses relays to grab public feeds of other instances then it's all those toots too. :ggbridge:

@georgetakei OK, so 1) where does the thing search if you search for a and 2) how long and 3) what does it take for
a to be findable from a another instance ? (I am testing this and the data is not reasuring)

Hey @seb or @cd24 or anyone... I am trying to confirm an assumption about hashtag searches. When I search a hashtag, or have pinned a hashtag column, I will only see the posts that my instance knows about, right? In other words, my search scope is essentially the federated timeline on sfba.social?

So for example, if I search for , I will only see posts by people on our instance and anyone who sfba users follow from other instances. Right?
