(Search isn’t the best here but people follow topics using #hastags. So add a few about things you’re interested in.) It’s a good idea to pin this to your profile and also to fill out your bio.

Most of all, just be yourself and you’ll find your tribe soon enough :)

Honestly, it's a pattern I keep chipping away it every time I see it to try and get people to break those bad habits of, you know, "I only have 280 characters" mindset (or even worse, just a flat-out cross-post). We have (at least) 500 characters here, and adding #hastags to your #mastodon post will GREATLY increase it's #reach and #discoverability. You all have a unique audience here waiting to find you, so make sure they find you! Build it, with hashtags, and they will come. 🙂

The reason nobody on #twitter uses #hastags anymore is because they are obsolete. Twitter search and trending topics algorithms basically treat every word in every post like it’s a #hashtag

@fschaap Another solution would be to use browser bookmarks, as #hastags have their own URL in #mastodon e.g.

@BridgetClinch I do think #hastags used properly would get us 80% of the way there. There are still dedicated bulletin boards (that are billionaire and ad free) but you're always beholden to the moderator

@mcc But a non-negligible amount of people are used to using #hastags as though they will appear in context and write like this even though it’s #annoying

He actualitzat #tweetdeck i ha començat el caos. Tot el que abans tenia a una pantalla ara ho tinc desvertebrat amb els perfils dels comptes que tinc per separat i diverses pantalles.
A mes, m'ha sortit una limitació per veure #hastags que de cop i volta no me'n deixa veure cap.

What’s it’s been like to be on the fedi verse for eight months:
-super disorienting at first. Randomly joined an instance simply because one person I knew joined. They stopped posting after a week.
-mourned lost connections.
-gradually tested things, tried out many apps, read a lot of how to posts.
-got comfortable with #hastags, making lists, actually interacting with folks.
-met many new intersting folk; far more international than previous social networks.

Why tf am I on the #Fediverse, all it is is people complaining about #BigTech and shitting on admins that don't immediately block #Meta before they have even done anything, our posts on #Mastodon are public anyway so does it really matter if meta sees them? If you don't want specific people seeing your posts, don't use a public posting platform, especially a #federated one where anyone can make a server and service that connects with it
Also I'm sick of overloading my posts with #hastags

I’ve been spending a bit of time on another instance and have been quite surprised how different the Mastodon experience can be. As an example, following the hashtag #TuesdayThoughts, logged on to aus.social I get the toots in the left image while on toot.cat I get those on the right. The toots on each instance do not show on the other

This is due to the different servers each instance blocks. This is partly why when I post a hashtag list intended to show popular hashtags (https://aus.social/@MarkIngs/109795975914685582), sometimes a popular hashtag may not seem to have many toots showing up. That might be due to you viewing the hashtag from a particular instance that blocks most of the toots under that hashtag whereas viewing from another instance displays the toots

As an aside I created an account on toot.cat because it has an increased character limit of 100,000. Not that I intend posting tombs of information, but it allows me to post more comprehensive popular hashtag lists. Presently I have posted only anchoring toots so as not to bombard multiple current timelines with the same list (https://toot.cat/@Hashtags)
