GET BOTTOM TRAWLING GONE

The #HaurakiGulf is in crisis. A century of degradation, from #BottomTrawling has pushed this unique place to the brink, and now many of its precious species are in a tailspin towards #extinction.

To turn things around, we’ve got to protect the whole area from bottom trawl fishing methods, and allow this unique marine #ecosystem to recover.

We can have a thriving #HaurakiGulf where #MarineLife is abundant but to get to that future, #BottomTrawling has got to go.

The public mandate for change is strong. More than 36,000 people signed this petition calling for an end to trawl methods in the Gulf and hundreds turned up on the beach and water at #MissionBay earlier this year to call for the same. BOTTOM TRAWLING TO CONTINUE IN HAURAKI GOLF

Yesterday the Government announced it WILL allow destructive bottom trawling to continue in large areas of the #HaurakiGulf.

We know that #BottomTrawling is the worst kind of commercial #fishing, bulldozing the #seafloor and indiscriminately destroying ancient #coral and other #MarineLife.

We're at the Ministry for Primary Industries in Auckland with a net full of 'bycatch'.

We're rebranding them as the Ministry of Destructive Fishing after yesterday's announcement that bottom trawling will continue in the Hauraki Gulf.

The sea was very calm, and the effect was enhanced by using a long exposure. It's after sunset, which is giving the sky and water this hue.
