Very excited... I found a random caterpillar on the ground! Was a long journey home juggling it from hand to hand. Gunna prep a box of moist coconut coir for it to pupate in. Apparently is a poplar hawkmoth

It’s National Moth Week, July 22 -30, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles & habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths).

This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse:…

The Crepuscular (Nephele hespera), is well-named - olive-green, with two stark white speckles on the wings, this particular individual was nearly invisible in a little strip of scrub-jungle adjoining beach, in state, Western .

Large, beautiful with powerful flights, Hawkmoths are important to us - , they make for us even as they feed off a variety of wild and cultivated .

@SheepOverboard
Lovely, and in far better nick than my most recent specimen.I agree, they’re beautiful.
I have others, of course 😄, however I’ll take a small bet most people don’t have a shot of one towering over a tree frog…

I was a little surprised to find this 5cm hawkmoth sitting on a tree trunk in broad daylight, but closer inspection suggested that it was probably recovering after a close shave. Still a beautiful moth, probably Theretra species.

So früh hab ich die Taubenschwänzchen noch nicht beobachtet. Hier trinkt es intensiv den Nektar der Aubretien.

An early hummingbird hawk moth drinking at the Aubretia. I've never seen them this early in the season.

Today’s moth on my finger is the Poplar Hawkmoth (Laothoe populi). These incredibly characterful moths are widespread, but only active at night. I particularly like the lilac and salmon-coloured washes on their wings. Interestingly, the adult moth doesn’t ever feed, solely relying on fat reserves built up as a caterpillar!

The yam hawkmoth (Theretra nessus), is a large, and stunning , which is found in a wide range of habitats.

Caterpillars feed on yam (among other plants).

Readily comes to light.

Known to fly during early hours of morning, and on cloudy days, during the monsoon season.

📸 15 OCT 2021 (20:00 hrs. approx.) near beach, district, Western .

I’ve always loved sharing pictures of moths on my fingers. They’re hugely misunderstood creatures and it shows other people that they’re actually ok! They are also a really accessible way to engage with wildlife, especially at home; and many of them are utterly stunning to look at, too. I’m going to start sharing my old and unshared moth pics on here. First up is a Convolvulus Hawk-moth from this September.
