Many #spring buds are appearing in our #pnw #hawthorns this week, encouraged by some welcome sunshine. This small tree also supports amazingly rich & shaggy communities of #lichen and #moss -- much denser than in similar sized nearby trees of other species. My guess is that these impressive thorns deter hungry deer from chowing down on our friends during the winter 💚
