"We still can't get out of the critical situation. And our news is getting worse... now we are in the active phase of preparing for the winter, and we have no money to buy hay for our 80 ungulates... We have debts in clinics of more than 100 thousand hryvnias, and every time the animals are admitted in critical conditions."

in Texas has dried up grass and depleted stock tanks as the state endured record heat. East ranchers were getting feed deliveries in early August rather than mid-November as they usually do.

For comparison -- we'd been working on improving the soil quality in our field, and 2021 was our best year ever, with 85 small rounds brought in before the Fourth of July, and we let the field rest after that for the very practical reason that our hay shed only holds 100 small rounds (more or less) for curing. We still have 18 small rounds of our 2021 hay.

Last year we brought in 45 small rounds before the Fourth of July and didn't see enough growth after that to try another cutting.

This year we decided not to cut before the Fourth, and the gamble paid off with plenty of rain this month. 42 small rounds at the end of July. The field looks like it wants to grow some more, and as much as it's tempting to do another cutting at the end of August or start of September, we'll probably let the field rest after enduring two drought years.

We brought in 42 small rounds of . Not bad for a drought year, and proportionally-speaking, a better fraction of a "good year" than many of the local farmers are getting.

Ever since we started cutting our hay ourselves, we cut it before the Fourth of July. This year we decided to hold off, and finally the rains we should have gotten in May arrived in July. It'll still be a lean year for hay, but it's time to cut it.

Six hay barns in Winona County in southeast burned in a two-week period, which is three times as many fires as occurred last year. The hot, dry summer is playing a role in that fire departments are having trouble finding a water source to extinguish the .

Low hay stocks in some Western Corn Belt/High Plains states mean forage buyers will likely see continued high prices. Some livestock producers are trying to buy earlier this year, due to concern about supply as has limited hay production.

For the holidays I forgot about scientific work and did some traditional hay work.

The hay pole is not made by me, as a short person I just raked the hay and left the poling (?) to taller people. Sorry, my English is lacking some words related to this kind of work.
