More on #RishiSunak's prevarication about (re)joining the EU's #horizon research funding programme:

no surprise that the continued delay to conluding the deal (already mostly finalised) is leading #scientists & research staff to either decamp to new jobs in the EU or not apply to come to the UK to join research projects....

My guess is by now the damage is irreversible, become yet one more cost of #Brexit & the #Tories political myopia.

Our response to the #climatecrisis is being stifled by a lack of staff & financial support on #climate science & its associated professions/jobs.

Of course, we shouldn't be surprised that the general problems in #workforce dynamics & the funding of #research would also pattern & shape our response to #climatechange.

The #Tories have completely f*cked up the country & now we are all going to pay the price.

As the UK still tries to obtain a discount on its association fees for #Horizon, as UK researchers are dropped from research projects & are ever more likely to pick up offers from EU-based #universities, its worth pointing out that Horizon is not just about the money, but also its well-established research networks.

If #RishiSunak does finally refuse the 'deal' on the table & launch Pioneer then UK researchers will be outside the networks that support so much European research.

On one hand #JeremyHunt puts £77mn behind an enhanced #creativeindustries strategy (well, perhaps 'strategy' is going a bit far; a creative industries policy, then);

#Tory #education ministers keep telling #universities that only #STEM subjects are worth investing in, and those pesky #arts subjects should be left rot wither on the vine...

Where the f**k do they think many of these creatives come from?

One of the key difficulties in dealing with the UK's wide range of problems from the #NHScrisis to #productivity stagnation, from the #housingcrisis to the #costoflivingcrisis, is that for the moment every crisis is refracted through the psycho-drama of internal #Tory party politics.

I had missed that #Ofgem's recent ban on the forcible installation of #prepaymeters was only a temporary measure.... come April, we're be back to vulnerable people having their homes broken into to fit meters that offer only the prospect of being cut off from vital #energy... sometimes the callousness of #business, makes my gasp....

A continuation of the #winterofdiscontent as Govt. continues to think playing hardball is a vote winner for its supporters;

real #wages continue to fall - PWC predict a fall to 2006 level(s);

More #economic stagnation (#recession) as #BrexitReality continues its programme of national self-harming;

#infrastructure contines to decline as absentee owners suck out money;

#ClimateCrisis worsens while Governments (again) kick policy changes down the road.

I wish my striking erstwhile colleagues well; by the time I retired from my university career, it was clear that (like so many sectors) staff were being viewed as a cost (that needed to be reduced) rather than the core asset of the organisation... essentially this stems from the ascendance of a financialised form of management across the #university sector... once they reach the C-suite, even seasoned academics lose sight of the organisation's mission & see only financial data;
