When out-of-pocket medical bills for childbirth are sent to a collection agency, US families are more likely to postpone having a second child. 8.3% reported having first childbirth medical bills sent to debt collections; they were 22.4% less likely to have another child in the study period than their counterparts who didn’t have medical debt.

A govt program that’s meant to help low-income patients often in rural areas (that includes Cleveland Clinic main, Brigham Women’s, Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial) allows some hospitals to buy meds at lower prices. They can “sell them to patients and their insurers for much more, often at facilities in affluent communities.”  on.wsj.com/3VtWHB6
