"We write to say what few others have claimed: the panicking industrialists of the early twentieth century were correct in their hysterics. The severing of health from capital will mark the end of capitalism."

What’s the aim of capitalism?

The language of the capitalism game is that of: profit, profit, profit, and that of growth, growth growth 📈 💸

The only thing that matters when playing the capitalism game, is capital accumulation

The official brief for this episode was to discuss the book by Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie Vierkant (fyi: versobooks.com/books/4081-heal)

We only get to the book at around ~ 15 mins in, because we first had to cover this *tiny detail* of how capitalism works :blobcatbusiness:

“We contend that a socialized medicine that fully rejects the eugenic ideology of ‘deservingness’ for treatment and rejects the public debt ideology of care as economic burden must be understood as fundamentally threatening to the existence of capitalism. We write to say what few others have claimed: the panicking industrialists of the early twentieth century were correct in their hysterics. The severing of health from capital will mark the end of capitalism.” —

“Arguments that take as a prerequisite that capital and finance exist as they are, and must at most be rebalanced, ignore the revolutionary potential of recognizing the economic system as only a transitory social order for the allocation and distribution of resources and activities.” —

I've been reporting on the book on my timeline the last week or so. But now I've finished reading the book, I've gathered my notes on my weblog:

But the bold claims don’t really matter. They sound good, sure. But the interesting take-home message of the book is that health is “imbricated” in capitalism (a word meaning ‘overlap’; the authors love to use it). I would say that health and capital are ‘entangled’. Hence, we can’t trust capitalism to take care of us, because the system of ‘taking care’ has already been made for extracting profit, and requires people to stay sick. We must free health care from this system. 5/5

In the end, the bold claim here is that capitalism needs health, and I think the authors mean by this that capitalism needs the construction of worker vs surplus (health vs illness). To argue for this claim, the authors have at best shown that capitalism always has made these distinctions in various ways. De facto. I think that’s not enough to convince me that removing the distinctions will kill off capitalism. Capitalism is a many-headed beast, as we know all too well. 4/5

We are all ill, then, means first and foremost that we’re all *surplus* to capital. All of our bodies are being used for profit-making, and they show the signs of it. The authors close the book by saying that “capital resides in health, as its host.” This is annoyingly ambiguous: is capital the host, or is it health? Later they clarify that health is the host body, and capital the parasite. Capital can’t kill its host, or it would have nowhere to reside, nothing to exploit. 3/5
