#LosAngeles’s “heat island” reduction efforts are working. Last year the city installed solar-reflective coating to 10 city blocks. According to reports, the coating reduced #heatisland effects 25-50% on high temperature days.

What an awesome idea! Every city should do this! Portland could do it if our current city council wasn't busy trying to mess with the Charter Reform passed by 58% of city voters last year!

As a #HeatIsland believer, I see climate change as a mistake at best and a scam at worst.
But we need to talk about how many humans we have, and how most of them live in cities that concentrate heat.
But I wonder if our #urban #trees can keep up with more intense weather due to #ClimateChange and other increaeed challenges of #Montreal life. Its not hard to imagine #HeatIsland s having a cascade effect on trees where intense heat damages them, they protect less and so on. Of course the places that can most benefit from trees - denser areas with more traffic - are the places where they will struggle the most.

In my part of #Montreal the city is putting in #trees on the easements in front of people's houses. This will mean less sun for #gardening more root infiltration in sewer lines but may also help ease #HeatIsland -ing.

Working on my presentation to the #RTPI conference next week, and took some measurements to test my thesis about #greenInfrastructure (i.e. plants) having a measurable cooling effect. Temperatures are 'shade' temps

A new study by Caltech researchers has found that low-income neighbourhoods in Los Angeles experience higher temperatures than affluent areas. This is due to the urban heat island effect, which is influenced by vegetation, building materials, and population density. The heat disparity can negatively impact the health, well-being, and productivity of the residents in the hotter areas.

#LosAngeles is becoming too hot to bear. Can it design its way cooler?
The city is forecast to double the number of days it reaches 95F by 2050, but innovative materials may help fight off the heat https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/03/los-angeles-is-becoming-too-hot-to-bear-can-it-design-its-way-cooler #heatisland #climate #coolroofs

winter biking
When I leave the forest de la Cambre and enter the streets of Brussels, temps jump remarkably. Much less biting cold on the fingers. Interesting to notice entering the urban heat island from the suburbs.

@lissaharris also from a #climateaction perspective:
- Win.Climate study shows winter energy saving costs from #heatpumps are greater mainly in Hudson Valley and upstate regions.
- I would expect energy savings in NYC and suburbs would be greater in summer compared to other regions because of the #heatisland effect
- NYRenews's CJJ Package doesn't include this legislation but seems like with additional summertime savings data would make economic sense & strong #climateadvocacy for all of #NYS

@lissaharris glad you're enjoying that luxury.
In #NYC we know that because of things like #redlining, lack of #greenspace, and #urbanization, the #heatisland effect is real, raising summer temperatures in the city. Unfortunately there are many that cannot pay for #airconditioning and they are higher risk for heat related illness. Cost-savings in the city/suburbs would probably be real and also increase access if the city used it as a form of #climatejustice.

@JasonThorne I'm so happy to see how well this green space has grown in. I would love to see more nature based solutions in #HamOnt projects. Spaces like Barton St need something to reduce the #heatisland effects. Thank you for sharing. #NbS #DepaveParadise
